The last time I saw Mum was just a couple of days before she died. She didn’t know I was visiting and when she saw me her face lit up and she said “Oh, its Shelley!”
Sometimes she could hardly stay awake when we were there, life was becoming increasingly exhausting for her but that day she was more alert. We sat and looked at a photo album together and we picked out different family members and sometimes she said “Look that’s me”. She asked how everyone was, I was able to hold her hand and we spent a happy hour together.
We talked about the Covid restrictions ending soon and we were looking forward to being able to go outside for an outing in her wheelchair.
As I was leaving and Mum was on her way back to the Sunnycroft lounge, the hairdresser stopped us and said “I’m doing you next Marjorie”, which was a nice surprise for her.
I told her I would be in again in a few days and that Bev was visiting the next day and Lesley the day after that. I gave her a hug and said I would see her soon.
I always hoped that the end would be peaceful and I think it was. We spent time with her at the hospital and though I don’t think she knew we were there, perhaps she did.
She had a good, long life, with many friends and family who loved her.
I will miss her forever.
